These are the tumbled edges of African abalone shells. They are also called lips, spikes, or rims. They can be used in shell crafts and make perfect trim on mirrors as shown in the pictures. The creamy white shell lips are either treated with hydrogen peroxide or bleached.
The small pieces are typically 5 to 10 cm long or 2" to 4".
You will get a selection similar to the one shown.
The lips are priced by the gram. They come in 1 kilogram bags but can be sold in smaller quantities, i.e. 1/4 kilogram, 1/2 kilogram, or 3/4 kilogram bags. We counted two 1 kilogram bags at random and found 76 pieces in one bag and 150 in another. Counts can vary considerably from one bag to the next. While we don't sort bags by the piece, we can look for a bag with a larger piece count or small one if it makes a difference in your project. Just let us know.
Our African abalone shells come from sustainable sources. The shells are a by-product of the food industry.
A USFWS export permit is required for all shipments outside the USA.
