These medical rugs are made using lambskins. These rugs have very dense wool that is 3 cm (~1.2") long. The medical rugs are tanned with natural tanning agents (Relugan GT 50) which causes the yellow hue.
Lambskins' wool has many beneficial health properties:
Thermoregulation - It maintains constant body temperature.
Ventilation - It is breathable and prevents the the body from overheating during sleep.
Hygroscopicity - It absorbs 40% moisture, i.e. sweat, and is easy to get rid of during airing.
Incombustibility - It's fibers are carbonized in fire; it does not spread it.
Neutralization of positive ions - It replaces positive ionization caused by artificial fibers and products, replacing it with a negaive that is natural to the human body.
Lanolin - The wool fiber coating hinders the growth of bacteria and dust mites, protects against dirt, and pollution stays on the wool surface making cleaning easier.
We measured one medical rug at random on the hide side and it was 41" long, 23.5" wide across the top, 31.5" wide across the middle, 32" wide across the bottom, and weighed 2.28 pounds.
These rugs are Eco-tanned without the use of heavy metals. The exact formulation is a trade-secret but the tanning meets European Union regulations for an environmentally friendly tanning process.
